Blogger or Wordpress? Why I am Sticking with Blogger

Which blogging platform should a beginner blogger use? Many different platforms exist, but the two most popular ones are Blogger and Wordpress.

People use Blogger because it's free, easy to use, and they can start blogging immediately. Many blogging authorities urge authors and illustrators to use Wordpress.org (requiring self-hosting) because it gives them full ownership of their blog. Wordpress has powerful features, but I'm sticking with Blogger for these reasons:

1. From a design standpoint, I can tweak a Blogger blog in multiple ways, while I'm limited to the Wordpress themes.

I like how I can start with a standard Blogger template and tweak every element, from the header, to the page labels, to the fonts, backgrounds, and colors:

I can also drag and drop "gadgets" or elements anywhere in the blog. If I want a less traditional look, I can use dynamic views (to see any Blogger blog in dynamic view, add "/view" to the end of the website address).

I can also use any number of free Blogger templates that are beautiful. The one I use for my portfolio site is provided by Confluent Forms:

My portfolio at www.enjoyingplanetearth.com

While Wordpress offers some beautiful themes and allows customization, the snazziest themes are paid premium features and are difficult to tweak on an element-by-element basis.

2. Blogger gadgets provide every "plug in" I need.

Wordpress supporters love the plug-ins available to make their sites more functional. As someone who showcases my work and writes articles, I haven't found anything I wanted that wasn't easily available as a Blogger gadget or added through HTML code.  For example, some of the gadgets on my sidebar are:
  • Picture links: I post a photo that is clickable to another link. My Etsy shop is accessible this way.
  • Popular posts: I can show a list of the blog's all time, monthly, or weekly posts, with thumbnails.
  • Custom HTML gadgets: Blogger includes social media sharing buttons on each post, but doesn't have a good gadget to include sharing buttons on the sidebar. Here areinstructions on how to create the social icons on Blogger using the HTML gadget. (I am not an HTML expert, but I do know how to search the internet for instructions.)

Sample Blogger gadgets

3. Blogger is free without ads.

If I never want to spend a penny on my blog, I don't have to.  If I were to use Wordpress.com, I could do so for free, but Wordpress can run ads on my blog over which I have no control. If I were to use Wordpress.org, I would have to pay for my domain name and hosting. Hosting is not that expensive, but it is a recurring expense.

The only expense I've incurred for this site is to pay for my domain name, www.sylvialiuland.com (the free version would be www.sylvialiuland.blogspot.com).

4. Blogger is part of the Google family.

Because Blogger is part of the Google family, blogs are supported by Google's resources. Other Google products like Adsense, Google Drive, Google+, Apps, Picassa Web Albums, Feedburner, and more, are integrated with Blogger. Google continues to provide new features for Blogger blogs like the ability to set one's own permalink or bringing Google+ comments into your blog.

One downside of having a blog on Blogger is that while you own the content, you do not own the actual blog. Therefore, you must abide by Google's terms of service or face a risk that Google can delete your blog at its discretion (generally, for spam or pornographic sites). That is a risk I'm willing to take, as I doubt that a children's illustration site will come close to raising any Google red flags.

5. I don't need to worry about security or bandwidth.

If I use a self-hosted Wordpress site, I need to keep up with security updates to make sure the site doesn't get hacked, but I don't have the time or inclination to learn about that. With Blogger, Google takes care of security, and it has a good system of screening for spam.

Also, if one of my posts goes crazily viral, Google will have enough bandwidth to accommodate the additional traffic without shutting down the site.

6. It's a wash for SEO.

© 2012 Sylvia Liu

There's debate about whether Blogger or Wordpress is better for SEO (Search Engine Optimization), but bloggers shouldn't be obsessing over SEO. If a blogger is posting good, fresh content that brings repeated visitors, SEO will take care of itself. But if one is concerned about it, Blogger has introduced several tools to optimize searches, including setting search preferences, meta tags, and making custom error (404) pages.

7. Blogger serves my purposes.

Basically, it's working, so I'm not fixing it. Maybe in the future I may want to run an e-commerce site and will find Blogger limited. But as a blogging platform, it's perfectly functional, and I enjoy being able to tweak and play with the design at a moment's whim.

8 Ways to Make a Blogger Blog Look and Act Like a Website

Does your Blogger blog look too "blog-like" for your tastes? Here are some tips to make a Blogger blog look and feel more like a full-service website:

1. Buy a custom domain name and point your account to it.

Instead of having your URL be www.yourwebsite.blogspot.com, you can have your URL be a more professional www.yourwebsite.com. You can buy a custom name either at a domain registration site or through Blogger (for $10 a year). Either way, set up the name by going to Settings --> Publishing ---> Publish on a custom domain. You can choose either to register with Blogger or you can use another registration site (if you do, follow the "Switch to advanced settings" instructions).

2. Play with the advance layout options to customize the look of your site.

Blogger has a fair variety of templates for your site. They aren't as snazzy as Wordpress templates, especially the premium (paid ones), but they are fully customizable. Here are three easy things to do:
  • Add a custom header.  At the "Layout" page, click on the Header box and add your own custom header image.
  • Add a custom background. Go to "Template," click "Customize," and pick a basic template to start. Click the "background" link to add a custom background.
  • Add custom details. Go to "Template," click "Customize," and start playing with all the details of each element of your blog. Here's an example of changing the various colors of links:

3. Add page tabs (About, FAQ, Contact).

Blogger lets you add up to 20 standalone static pages that show up under your header as tabs. Go to the "Pages" section to add and edit pages. Click on the option "Show pages as Top tabs" to get page tabs across your header:

Blogger page tabs screenshot

Good pages to have are: About, Portfolio (if you're an artist), Books (if you're published), Contact, and FAQ.

4. Add a contact form.

Once you've set up your Contact page, you can create a form for it, using Google Docs. See my post on How to Make a Contact Page for Blogger for instructions.

5. Add social media icons.

Blogger includes social media sharing buttons for each post, but doesn't have a good gadget to allow people to follow you on your social sites. If you look to the top right of this blog, you'll see social media buttons that lead to my Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and Pinterest accounts, and that allow people to subscribe to this blog through an RSS reader or email.

The way to add the icons is to use the "HTML/Javascript" gadget. Here are my instructions on how to add social media icons to your blog (I learned how to do this from Adventures as a Small Town Mom but have learned some added tips since then). The set of circular social icons I used can be found here. If you want to choose other images, google "free social media icons" or check out: 33 Beautiful Social Media Icon Sets for Designers and Bloggers and 50 Free Social Media Icon Sets.

6. Add a favicon.

A favicon is the little icon that shows up next to a website address in the browser bar. Mine looks like this:

See my post, How to Add a Favicon to your Blogger Blog, for easy instructions.

7. Use the Picture gadget to link to other sites.

If you have an Amazon sales or Etsy page or a dedicated portfolio site, you can use the Picture gadget to feature the link in your sidebar. This blog uses a picture gadget to link to my Etsy store.

8. Add E-commerce features.

If you want to sell something directly from your blog instead of through a separate service, you can add a Paypal button to your blog, either in the sidebar or in a page or post that describes your wares. Go to your Paypal account's "Merchant Services" section for instructions.

P.S. If you're really ambitious, custom design your entire site.

By the way, if you know HTML coding, the sky's the limit for changing your Blogger blog into a website, as you can edit every part of your site. How to Make your Blog at Blogger look more Professional

Blogging has become very popular among artists on the internet. Typically, artists choose one of two blogging platforms – Blogger or Wordpress. A free blog can be created at both of these sites. I have two main blogs myself, both hosted by Blogger. In my time online, I have discovered several ways to make these blogs appear more professional, even though they are freely hosted by Google.
professional blogger blogThe advantages of using Blogger are many.
  • In minutes anyone with little technical knowledge can have a free blog of their own.
  • Blogger is also known for its high security. Your blog is as secure as your Google password.
  • Blogger has 100% uptime. Hosted websites sometimes experience periods of downtime. You can feel confident that people will always find your blog.
  • Plenty of free widgets, tutorials and codes are available on the web to optimize the blog.
For those who have a blog hosted by Google Blogger, here are some steps you can take it make it appear more professional.

How to Make a Professional Looking Blog at Google Blogger

  1. Search for a free premium template

bloggingYou have the option of choosing one of the free templateswhich Blogger provides. But, there are certain advantages of finding a premium Blogger template.

Uniqueness – Much less people using it than the free templates from Blogger.

Optimized for SEO – Many of the premium templates are created by web designers and are optimized for search engines.

Search at Google for free Blogger portfolio template (search under images to see some very good free templates) or free Blogger magazine template, depending on the type you want.

To add your new template, click Template in your Blogger dashboard menu. Hit Backup/Restore at the top right. Backup your current template first by clicking Download full template, in case you are not satisfied with the look of the new one. Then, click the Choose File button to upload your new Blogger template.
  2. Remove the Blogger navbar at the top

The blogger navigation bar has several functions, including search, next blog, flag blog, and a signinfor your Dashboard. But, the main disadvantage is that it makes a blog look like millions of blogs out there. So, in the interest of having a professional looking and unique blog, I recommend removing this navbar.

remove blogger navbarLogin to your Blogger dashboard. Select Layout in the main menu. Click the edit link next to Navbar at the top to get a Navbar configure menu. At the bottom, of this menu, check the Off option. Hit Save and you are done. Your blog will now display a blank space where the navbar once was.

If you don’t like this blank space, there is a more complicated way of removing the code by editing your template. Tutorials can be found for this by searching forremove blogger navbar at Google. Remember though, before editing your Blogger template, always back it up!
  3. Get a unique custom domain

custom domainIf your goal is to receive visitors via search engines, you will be fighting an uphill battle without a custom domain for your blog. The normal domain for blogger normally looks like this: 123.blogspot.com. With recent changes, these domains actually redirect to country specific domains such as .ca, depending on where a visitor lives. Technically, your visitors will be going to different blogs, since the domains are different.

Of course this presents several problems if you are hoping to get your blog ranked in search enginesBlogger traffic is spread out across several country specific domains!

There is a very simple solution to this… but it is surprising how often it is overlooked – a Custom Domain. Buying and setting up a custom domain is very easy. Blogger has their own service for just $10 a year. Godaddy also has an easy setup page for Blogger.

We have a tutorial for redirecting a custom domain to Blogger – Redirect Godaddy Domain to Blogger If you need help setting up a domain, please mention it below.
  4. Blogger Favicon

The favicon is the tiny icon seen near the name of your website, at the address bar in your browser. They make a blog appear more professional and are one of the ways to brand yourself on the web.

upload blogger faviconA favicon is typically 16 X 16 px in size. To create one, search online for free favicon creator or go to the free tool at Dynamic Drive. Use a logo, or even use a photo of yourself or a painting.

Refer to this tutorial for creating a logo: Make a Logo

When your favicon is created, go to Layout in your Blogger dashboard. Near the Favicon section at the top, click edit. Find the favicon file on your computer, upload it, Save, and you are all done.
  5. Create an attractive banner for the top.

A banner can include your logo, your name, and even image(s) of your artwork. The size will depend on the size which your template allows. If you have knowledge of Photoshop or other image editing software, I recommend creating one there. There are also numerous free online banner makers which may be found by searching using that phrase.

If you want a tutorial for creating a banner using Photoshop or other software, please let me know.
These are just a few things which can be done to make a Blogger blog appear more professional. After these are done, take additional steps, such as adding a label cloud, a form for your contact page, and exploring the many free widgets available online.
